  • Pilots Union Says No Negotiation Meetings Scheduled

    By Andrea Ahlers--

No new talks are scheduled between American Airlines and its pilots union even as the carrier says its cutting capacity and canceling flights partly due to pilots calling in sick and higher maintenance requests.

In a note to pilots on Sunday, the Allied Pilots Association said that the union has not presented the company with any contract proposals and has not met with management.

"Management has verbally expressed their desire to resume negotiations, and we've asked for that request to be put in writing so the parties can establish a protocol for the current situation," the hotline message said.

The two parties have not held negotiation talks since a bankruptcy judge allowed American to reject its pilots contract earlier this month and impose work rule changes that the carrier says are necessary to successfully restructure.

On Monday, American cancelled 82 flights, or about 4 percent of its schedule, according to FlightStats.com. And while there were only 22 cancelled flights on Sunday, a little over half of the flights arrived on-time, or 56 percent, the website said.

Keep reading for the [partial] hotline message from the APA.

On Tuesday, APA President Keith Wilson and Negotiating Chairman First Officer Neil Roghair met with the National Mediation Board in Washington, D.C. We are currently discussing the possibility of a status conference with the NMB and management in the very near future to determine the NMB’s level of participation going forward. On Wednesday, members of the Negotiating Committee met with the Unsecured Creditors’ Committee’s labor sub-committee to discuss the status of APA negotiations. The UCC reconfirmed its support of APA’s 13.5 percent equity claim, if an agreement is reached “promptly.”

As of this update, we have not met with management and no talks are scheduled. Contrary to a number of rumors, APA has not presented management with any proposals and there is no imminent agreement.

Management has verbally expressed their desire to resume negotiations, and we’ve asked for that request to be put in writing so the parties can establish a protocol for the current situation. At the same time, we are in regular discussions with the APA Board of Directors regarding negotiating goals, particularly in relation to where the rest of the industry is moving. If you haven’t done so already, we encourage you to review the Delta Contract Comparison provided to us by ALPA. It includes details of the latest agreement reached by the Delta pilots.

We will provide an update once a return to the negotiating table is agreed to.
